It's always great to hear from such an articulate and passionate educator. Dr. Lucas Shivers, the Elementary Education Director of USD 383, gave a great presentation about curriculum updates and the status of programming at our area elementary schools. Thanks Dr. Shivers.

Bryant, one of our guests, talks to Karen Rogers this morning.

Mr. Inspiration: Josh Salmans.

Congrats to District Governor Deb Rodenbaugh Schaub for receiving her Paul Harris X3 pin!
Our club supports USD 383 in numerous ways including the purchase of Storyworks, a resource teachers use with their students. Previously, teachers had been buying the guides with their own money.

If I hear that question one more time...

Posted by Clay Myers-Bowman on Jul 31, 2014

We were back at Meadowlark Hills today, but met in the Prairie Star dining room due to the Market Place (think high-end garage sale) event this weekend. It's always a treat to hear from Lyle Butler, and he didn't disappoint. According to Lyle, there's one question he's gotten nearly every week of his tenure at the Chamber (14 years): When is Red Lobster going to open a store in Manhattan?  The answer? Not any time soon. I guess the residents of Manhattan REALLY like their Red Lobster.

Each person represents 100 hotel rooms in the Manhattan area, in 2004. By the end of 2014 we'll have nearly 1500 hotel rooms. Wow.

Do YOU know what Wheat Blast is?

Posted by Clay Myers-Bowman on Jun 19, 2014

Interesting presentation this morning by Christian Cruz. As a K-State graduate student, Christian received a Rotary Global Grant (with the support of our club and the noon club) in 2013 to study Wheat Blast (a plant disease) in Bolivia. You can read more about the research here. And as Patrick Schaub reminded us, Rotary Global grants are made possible by contributions to the Rotary Foundation.

Other highlights:

  • Today was Noda's last meeting with us. It's been great to have her as a member the past couple of years and we wish her (and her family) well on their journey.
  • Debra Rodenbaugh Schaub will be installed tonight as the next District #5710 Governor. You can attend the ceremony during the Jazz Festival at Corporate Woods in Overland Park. Congrats Debra!
  • Next week the gavel passes from current Club President Rich Jankovich to President-Elect Lisa Sisley.

Water Matters Day -- A Family Water Appreciation Day of Facts and Fun

Posted by Bill Lansdowne on Aug 04, 2011
Manhattan, Kansas -- Rotary International actively tackles water and sanitation challenges worldwide by providing local support for Rotary members to initiate and volunteer for a variety of international projects. For several years the Manhattan Konza Rotary Club has donated dollars and volunteer time for ongoing water and sanitation projects around the world. Most recently Manhattan volunteers braved heat, humidity and treacherous roads in Panama's central mountains to install simple, effective, community-sized water filters. The rugged, maintenance-free filters installed in Panama work for many years to ensure Panamanian indigenous mountain communities clean, disease-free water sources.

Along with 16 K-State basketball players, there to assist in handing out books, Rotary volunteers visited 11 elementary schools in Manhattan for book distribution. Fifth graders in USD 383 received thesauruses and fourth graders at Seven Dolors and Flint Hills Christian Schools received dictionaries. The reference books are intended to aid students in their school work. A total of 552 books valued at $1,094 were distributed. The books were purchased by the Manhattan Rotary Club and the Manhattan Konza Rotary Club from the Dictionary Project in Kansas City. This is a nonprofit organization that promotes the distribution of reference books to school children nation-wide. The books were also partially funded with a Rotary International grant from Rotary District 5710. The two Manhattan Rotary clubs have collaborated on this project since 2005 to support literacy and education. This is the first year KSU basketball players have participated. Players who helped distribute the books visited with kids about keeping up their studies and, of course, about Wild Cat basketball.
